Coat Color Photo Matrix

ALL posted photos are expressly owned by me, unless indicated otherwise. They are not to be copied/used for any purpose. Using one of my photo's and indicating it is mine, without my permission is unacceptable. If you would like to use one of my photo's to explain a color to someone, provide the LINK to the photo, NOT the photo itself. That way, people are directed to this website and I receive credit (good or bad) for the photo. If you would like to use some of my photo's for a school project or as a learning tool for 4H rabbit clubs, please contact me first for permission.

To go BACK to "Identifying Coat Colors" Click Here.

I put this together back in 2012/2013 and have been adding to it over the years.

Colors are organized by PATTERN (A-series) down the left side. See what happens to the coat color when a single gene is changed in the C-series, by viewing a row left to right. Many of these colors are NOT recognized, but are genetically possible. Consult your SOP for recognized colors.

If you have pictures of some of these missing colors, I would love to use them. They do not necessarily have to be Holland Lops as some of these colors are more common in other breeds. Thanks.

GBF's Kennedy at 2.5 months. If you don't have a Blue available to compare against, you might think you have a Blue. However, Lilacs are lighter in color then a Blue. It's easiest to tell when they are just little kits, as Blue's are a nice dark blue. As kits, Lilacs are quite pale.

E(s) is a modifier gene. It covers the middle band with dark pigment. Darkens the agouti's eye circles, triangle at nape of neck, feet, legs, inside of ears and belly, leaving behind colored tips to the guard hair. There should be NO agouti rings when you blow into the coat. See my chart HERE showing the interactions of the A- and E- series genes on coat color and how it impacts steel!

Pix needed, however, the main steel buck in my barn is AaBbCcDdEse. He appears black with no ticking on him anywhere. He has been test bred to prove his genotype - taken to torts and producing Orange and tort offspring.

Self black gt steel doe.

To look at GBF's Trip Wire, you would think she is a Self Black (phenotype). Her coat is clean - no stray whites, or ticking of any kind to give clue to that fact that she is genetically a self, non-extension Steel.

Genetically she is aaBBC_DdE(s)e. Produced by a Tort Buck [aa BB Cc(chl) Dd ee] x self steel, non extension doe [aa BB C_ Dd E(s)e Ww] breeding.

Wow. THEN we have all the steel possibilities above that are Self based "aa" and Otter based "a(t)". Needless to say, these two variations are not proper steels, but we will include these pix if anyone has them.
